The Walter Scott murder isn’t so much about an extrajudicial police killing as it is about a historical devaluing of African life, the so-called “black” body there to be used up/abused/consumed/cast aside.
As members of a society deputized to serve as the interface between an “us” and a “them”, police officers often end up being the ones to impart this social reality but the Trayvon Martin-George Zimmerman and Jordan Davis killings show us the dynamic isn’t strictly about them, their body cameras or training.
Its about how Western society perceives the ex-slave, in particular- the black male. And whether the shooter is a police officer, a white guy or a black guy, it plays out the same, over and over.
Nothing here is surprising. It is another in a long, regular pattern of historical abuses. It is easy to kill “black” people. In fact its normal.
So don’t get it twisted and don’t let it confuse you.
On the Tell-lie-vision, you will see various politicos attempt to spin the issue for more or less surveillance, more or less gun control, more or less policing. All of it, diversionary tactics. Few will dare face the fundamental issue- Americans typically find it easy to satisfy its blood lust through the sacrifice of African bodies. It is what built this country and hemisphere yesterday.
Will it continue tomorrow?
